I watched all six hours of `Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth` this week while recovering from COVID. What an amazing series. It really should be required viewing as it is an exceptional primer on the human psyche and condition. I personally really resonated with episode 3 `Sacrifice and Bliss`.
I’ve always been a very philosophically minded person, although I am not well educated in the subject. I am fascinated by the human psyche and its manifestations of religion, belief, magic, spirituality and narratives. I have always had an instinctively curious and somewhat intuitive understanding of these principals but I have never really given attention to the literature on the subject. Indeed a big part of my youth was spent rejecting religion and belief on face-value as a corruption of human progress. Only now, in mid-life I guess, do I have the space to ingest some of the accumulated knowledge we have to offer each other in the form of these important books.
Part of my personal problem is that I read extremely slowly, I am so grateful for the information sharing and the availability of these works in the form of videos and audiobooks. It is perhaps the primary reason I can actually absorb the content of these works now.
My favorite quote from the series:
The condescension of the infinite in the minds of man is what looks like god.
