Daniel Watts I’m not so sure. Look into even some of the smaller AI stuff like the Replika app. A bunch of users were basically using it in lieu of a real relationship. The company recently changed the functionality and now there are a bunch of people with emotional trauma as if they had a real divorce or something.

I tend to lean more to the idea that none of this technology is healthy and society is racing towards some dystopian hell. I know for most people it’s just “neat” but not really thinking of the ramifications. Change or technological advancement for its own sake is how we ended up with the atom bomb.

Eric Isbell AI is just a reflection of ourselves. We might have some terrible growing pains, like we always do, but it is not going away so the only choice is to learn how to live, use , and understand it. Those who cannot cope will not succeed. It is natural evolution.

Eric Isbell Read-up on the social disruptions around all major technological developments and you will see the same concerns, fears, and the most absolute insane prophecies. People thought no one would care for stories after the printing press came… it also caused the Christian church to split. People thought lightning was the judgment of god until we harnessed electricity to run everything (wait a minute…), people said your skin would fall-off if you drove faster than 60 mph. We are in the infancy of both the tech and the fallout… an exiting time to be alive.

Daniel Watts I don’t agree that it is some natural evolution. Nor that it is some thing everyone needs to accept. When things start getting really bad with climate change, economic collapse, lack of resources to sustain life and such, all this AI, social media, etc… isn’t going to mean much. The only evolution that I see that would be helpful is humans learning how to sustain each other. All this preoccupation with meaningless technology seems a waste of time. And like all things it will just be controlled by capitalists anyway.

The person who knows how to plant and tend a garden, hunt, deal with other humans face to face, build things, fix things, etc… these are the people that will always survive the best in society. Not someone who needs an app for emotional validation or a program to write a paper for them.

Daniel Watts I guess I’m not the type of person to just accept something I find a negative. I’d rather focus on what I feel is important, even if society and their dumb ideas are going a different direction. I’ll survive just fine. The only things that really matter in life are food, shelter, companionship. I got those pretty well locked down.

I never said people have to accept it, just that it is not going away, so you can cope or not, or ignore it, all plausible options. Having a meaningful life falls outside tech in my opinion, but our societies are influenced by it. If we ever go back to a hunter gatherer society, we got way bigger problems on our hands than AI. People are freaking out about AI art and writing because that is all they see/know, but AI is having so much more and deeper impact than what most people I’ve seen talking about this stuff understand. Already AI has found DNA protein folds that have eluded geneticists for decades, it has learned how to build new bacteria and materials by assembling molecules from scratch, it has solved a number of mathematical problems that have been hanging for years. Soon, it could give better psychological advice and be a better friend than real folks. The limits are endless. I’m only gonna be around for a few more decades at the most anyway so, BRING IT ON! Shit, I just saw that you can now order an at-home CRISPER lab to make genetic modifications to yourself. We are entering a new age.

Daniel Watts Some good points, at least with the medical stuff for sure. But some things in society should be fought against and pushed against sometimes too. Including certain implementation of technology. Is having an AI friend better just because it fills an emotional need? Is that the kind of society we want where all our wants and needs could potentially be filled by computers? Maybe an extreme vision but I think it is worth consideration. Personally I’d rather be miserable and alone than have some emotional quirk of mine taken care of by a bot. Reality is more important to me than comfort. But maybe I’m in the minority. And I hate referencing fiction but the part of WallE where the human all became blobs that had everything taken care of for them does seem a bit apt as it pertains to this AI conversation. In reality I think some of it may be good for us, like the more Star Trek type stuff. But knowing modern human existence I’m not overly optimistic that it will be the negative aspects that float to the surface.

Daniel Watts possibly. Just not seeing the beauty part on the horizon. I mean nature is beautiful, sometimes people can be beautiful, sometimes their creations can be beautiful (paintings, music, books, etc…) . Seems a bit of a stretch we may find beauty from a human technological creation creating itself beauty. Even Data could only mimic style, but no “heart”. But I guess beauty is a matter of taste and opinion. I have not been impressed so far with any AI writing, Art, music, etc… but who knows.

I do have my concerns that technology could start chipping away at what makes us Human (probably already has). Again maybe extreme vision of the future. I guess I feel this stuff isn’t helping people get smarter or becoming better in anyway. Maybe just me though.

Eric Isbell Concerns are smart, so is caution. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A life saved by AI could be seen as a beautiful thing. AI out-doing human skill could be seen as ugly. Technology started chipping away, as well as define what it means to be human the first time one hominid beat another with a stick, and then came fire and all the horrors and beauty that came with that. I don’t see technology nor the lack of technology for that matter “saving us” from ourselves. Life the world and all we create simply are. We all really have a limited ability to change anything, so opening up to the experience seems like the paramount goal.

I’m in DALL·E jail. I guess it was only a matter of time. This is why I cannot have nice things. I guess my prompt “A cross-section of bones, veins, organs and machines in a suggestive position” sealed my fate. They also really do not seem to like the words “nude”, “flesh”, or “cavity”.
